Comfort and Joy Crochet

Skill Level:

Easy

Measurements:

17 x 12 (length x height) bag only, measurement doesn't include the straps.

Materials:

• Yarn: Value brand from Michaels
• Hook: 5.5 mm, US I-9
• Additional supplies: weaving needle, stitch markers

Abbreviations:

ch = chain

hdc = half double crochet

exsc = extended single crochet 

st(s) = stitch(es)

sc = single crochet

sl st = slip stitch

yo = yarn over

Special Stitch:

Extended single crochet (exsc): insert hook, yo, pull through (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through 1 loop, (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops.

Notes:

• Read through pattern instructions carefully.
• Feel free to change how long and wide you want the bag. You do this by changing the number of beginning chains and how many rows you crochet up. 
• The straps are also customizable. Just chain how long you want the straps to be.

Instructions:

Making the bag

Ch 42.

Hdc in 3^rd ch from hook. Hdc in each ch until last ch. 2 hdc in last ch. Do not turn. Working into the other side of the chain, 2 hdc in next ch. Hdc in each ch until ch-2 space. 3hdc in ch-2 space. (you should be back at the beginning of your chain)

1 exsc in each st until 2 sts before you reach the corner stitch. 2 exsc in next 5 sts. Repeat once more.

1 exsc in each st until you reach your desired height (my bag was about 23 rows). Do not fasten off.

Making the straps

Use stitch markers.

Count how many stitches from one corner to the other. For my bag is was about 44 stitches.

Divide that number by 2 to get to the middle of each front panel (44/2=22). Count in that many stitches from the corner (for me, I counted in 22), place a stitch marker. Repeat for other front panel. Move stitch markers if necessary to have them match up.

Count 10 stitches in both directions and place stitch markers. This will be how wide the space is between your two straps. Repeat for other front panel.

Remove the middle stitch markers (for me it was the marker at stitch #22)

Sc from corner to first stitch marker (about 12 stitches in)

Make first strap which will be the shorter strap: Ch 20.

Sl st to join in next stitch marker (20 stitches away), ch 1, sc around to next stitch marker.

Make second strap which will be the longer strap: ch 60, sl st to next stitch marker (20 stitches away), ch 1, sc around.

Sc in each ch of shorter strap. Sc around to longer strap. Sc in each ch of longer strap.

Continue to sc around and around until your straps are as thick as you want. My straps were 5 rows thick.

Finishing:

Fasten off and weave in all ends.
